A cross-sectional study of 422 pregnant women at Abebebch Gobena Hospital found a 38.2% prevalence of common mental disorders (CMD, e.g., depression and anxiety). This is higher than many prior estimates in Ethiopia, suggesting routine mental health screening in antenatal care is urgently needed. For African health systems, integrating mental health into maternal services could reduce untreated morbidity.
Community health workers in Cambodia show good knowledge but poor practice in managing diabetes and hypertension.
A survey of 384 community health workers (CHWs) found 70% had adequate knowledge about type-2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension (HTN), but only 38% reported correct practices. This gap suggests that training alone is insufficient; ongoing supervision and resources are needed. For African CHW programs, the finding underscores that knowledge does not automatically translate into effective care.
A nationwide cervical precancer screening program in Ghana reached over 5,000 women with high HPV positivity.
The ‘Protect Your Pearl’ initiative screened 5,348 women across Ghana using HPV genotyping and visual inspection; 18.5% tested positive for high-risk HPV. This demonstrates that a collaborative model using trained alumni can achieve national coverage. For African cancer prevention, it provides a scalable blueprint for low-resource settings.
Ethiopian chronic hepatitis B patients with cirrhosis have a distinct immune signature compared to those without cirrhosis.
A study of 287 untreated Ethiopian HBV patients found that those with cirrhosis had lower CD4+ T-cell counts and higher levels of exhausted CD8+ T cells. This immune profile differs from patterns seen in non-African populations, suggesting that disease progression may be immunologically distinct in Africa. The finding challenges the one-size-fits-all approach to HBV management.
Parkinson’s disease genetic risk variants differ substantially across African, Asian, and European ancestries.
An observational genetic study of over 40,000 individuals found that the GBA1 p.E365K variant, a risk factor in Europeans, is rare in African populations, while the LRRK2 p.G2019S variant is more common in North African Arabs. This means that genetic testing panels developed in Europe may miss risk in African patients. For African neurology, ancestry-specific studies are essential for accurate risk prediction.
Replacing 20% of wheat flour with acorn flour from Tunisian oak reduces the glycemic index of focaccia by 30%.
Focaccia made with 20% Quercus canariensis acorn flour had a glycemic index (GI) of 55 (medium) versus 79 (high) for wheat-only bread, and increased fiber and polyphenol content. This is the first food application of this Tunisian acorn species. For African food science, it offers a way to valorize local underutilized crops into healthier staple foods.
🔬 Global breakthroughs
A global consensus renames polycystic ovary syndrome to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).
An international panel of 40 experts from 20 countries agreed that the term PCOS is misleading and stigmatizing, as it implies ovarian cysts when the condition is primarily endocrine and metabolic. The new name PMOS better reflects the disorder’s features and aims to reduce diagnostic delays. For African women, this could improve awareness and care, as PCOS is often underdiagnosed.
Blue light-assisted bladder cancer surgery reduces recurrence risk by 20% compared to white light surgery.
A Cochrane review of 15 randomized trials (2,608 participants) found that blue light transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) lowers the risk of recurrence at 12 months (risk ratio 0.80). However, no difference in progression or survival was seen. For African urology, the technology may be cost-prohibitive, but the finding supports its use where available.
A new risk score predicts 5-year risk of both gastric and esophageal cancer using routine health check-up data in Japan.
The J-GESS score, developed from 33,422 screening participants, uses age, sex, smoking, alcohol, and lab values to predict both gastric cancer and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The model showed good discrimination (C-statistic 0.78). For African settings with rising upper GI cancers, similar risk-stratified screening could be developed using local data.
A hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship reveals critical gaps in preparedness for rare zoonotic infections.
A multi-country cluster of Andes virus (ANDV) hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome on the MV Hondius, with cases and deaths, exposed diagnostic and response failures in mobile, closed settings. The authors argue that current surveillance systems are ill-equipped for rare zoonoses in international travel. For African public health, this highlights the need for cross-border diagnostic networks.
