Privacy Policy

Effective date: 13 June 2026

FRELIP — the Free eLibrary Portal (“FRELIP”, “we”, “us”, “our”) operates frelip.org together with its companion platforms: the discovery search service (search.frelip.org), the research guides (guides.frelip.org), and the learning platform (learning.frelip.org). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We are committed to protecting your privacy while providing free, open access to scholarly resources.

If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at info@frelip.org.

Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Newsletter & updates: if you subscribe, we collect your email address to send you updates. Subscription is double opt-in, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email.
  • Contact & enquiries: if you email us or use a contact form, we receive the information you provide (such as your name, email address, and message).
  • Learning accounts: if you register on learning.frelip.org (our Moodle platform), we collect the account details you provide (name, email) and your course activity, in order to deliver the courses.
  • Comments & contributions: if you leave a comment, we collect the comment content, any name/email you provide, and related metadata.

Information collected automatically

  • Log & usage data: like most websites, our servers automatically record information such as your IP address, browser type, device information, referring pages, and the pages you visit, for security and to understand how the site is used.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: see the “Cookies” section below.

Cookies

Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use:

  • Essential cookies — required for the site and learning platform to function (for example, session and login).
  • Preference cookies — to remember choices such as language or display settings.
  • Analytics cookies — to measure and improve how the site performs (see “Analytics & third parties”).
  • Advertising cookies — only if and when we display advertising (see “Advertising”). FRELIP does not currently display third-party advertising.

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies may affect site functionality. Where required by law, we ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies.

How we use your information

  • To provide and maintain our services (search, guides, courses, and content).
  • To send newsletters and updates you have requested, and to respond to your enquiries.
  • To operate, secure, and improve our platforms and prevent abuse.
  • To comply with our legal obligations.

Analytics & third parties

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers who help us run FRELIP, and only as needed:

  • Email delivery: we use Brevo to send newsletters and transactional email. Your email address is processed by Brevo for this purpose.
  • Hosting & infrastructure: our sites are hosted by third-party providers who process server data on our behalf.
  • Analytics: we may use Google Analytics and Google Search Console to understand site usage. These services may set cookies and process usage data.
  • Embedded content: pages may include embedded content (such as YouTube videos or social-media posts) that can collect data about you as though you had visited that third party directly.
  • Legal: we may disclose information where required by law or to protect our rights and our users.

Advertising

FRELIP is a free, open-access service and does not currently display third-party advertising. If we introduce advertising in future, we may use Google AdSense and other vendors. In that case:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to our sites or to other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visits to FRELIP and/or other sites on the internet.
  • You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendor cookies at www.aboutads.info/choices.
  • Where required, we will obtain your consent through a consent banner before serving personalised ads.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have rights under the Nigeria Data Protection Act / NDPR and, for visitors in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the GDPR. These may include the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, email info@frelip.org. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Data retention

We keep personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy or as required by law. Newsletter data is kept until you unsubscribe; learning-account data is kept while your account remains active.

Children’s privacy

Our services are intended for students, researchers, and the general public. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under the age of 13 (or the age defined by your local law) without appropriate consent. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will remove it.

International transfers

FRELIP serves a global audience, and your information may be processed in countries other than your own. Where required, we take steps to ensure appropriate safeguards are in place.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will revise the “Effective date” shown above and, where appropriate, notify you of significant changes.
