A new traffic flow model accounts for mixed vehicle types and lane violations, improving realism for heterogeneous roads.

The model extends existing second-order multi-class traffic flow theory by treating different vehicle classes as moving obstacles, capturing interactions and speed differences. This changes the assumption that traffic is homogeneous, offering a tool for better simulation of African roads where lane discipline is often relaxed. For researchers and planners, it provides a more accurate basis for designing traffic management strategies in mixed-traffic environments.

Rooftop solar with battery storage remains economically viable in Nigeria despite grid unreliability and back-feeding.

Using Eagle Square in Abuja as a case study, the analysis shows that even with frequent grid outages and the ability to feed excess power back to the grid, the solar-plus-storage system is cost-effective. This challenges the notion that unreliable grids make solar investments risky, instead suggesting they can enhance viability. For African policymakers and investors, it supports scaling up distributed renewable energy in regions with weak grid infrastructure.
