🌍 African-led research

Secondary carbonate accumulation in semi-arid Central Botswana is controlled by both soil-forming processes and sedimentary layering.

This finding challenges the assumption that carbonate buildup in dryland soils is driven mainly by climate, showing that local geology and depositional history also dictate where carbonates form. For land managers and farmers in semi-arid Africa, this means soil carbon and fertility assessments must account for site-specific sedimentary controls, not just rainfall. The work, published in Geoderma Regional by Dina Ebouel et al. (2024), provides a baseline for interpreting paleoclimate and soil health in Botswana’s fluvial landscapes.

Cerium phosphate nanoparticles can be stabilized in cellulose-based matrices with citric acid and metronidazole, forming high-dispersion nanocomposites.

This synthesis shows that cellulose derivatives (methylcellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, and sodium carboxymethylcellulose) effectively prevent nanoparticle clumping, a common barrier in nanocomposite production. Wind direction redistributes vegetation cooling in cities, so cooling is not just a local effect around green patches.

This challenges the common assumption that urban vegetation cooling is isotropic (uniform in all directions) and local. Using a source–medium–receiver framework in China’s Greater Bay Area, Qasim et al. (2024) show that prevailing winds carry cooling downwind, meaning the benefits of parks extend beyond their immediate borders. Wood charcoal from Hellenistic and early Roman Corinth reveals specific human-woodland interactions, showing which trees were used and how landscapes changed.

This analysis moves beyond general assumptions about ancient Greek land use by identifying the actual wood species people collected and burned. The mathematical structure of water quality indices affects how well they track seasonal contamination in a semi-arid Algerian aquifer.

Magnetic mangrove biochar effectively adsorbs 2,4,6-trichlorophenol from water, offering a low-cost treatment option.

The study shows that modifying biochar with Fe3O4 nanoparticles enhances removal of this toxic chlorinated phenol, a common industrial pollutant. Because mangrove biochar is derived from abundant plant waste, the method could be a sustainable water-treatment solution for coastal African communities.
