Democratizing Knowledge Access for Emerging Economies
FRELIP (Free Information Literacy Project) is a free, open-access platform dedicated to closing the information gap in emerging economies. We believe that every student, educator, and researcher — whether in Lagos, Dhaka, or Lima — deserves access to the same quality educational resources available to those in well-funded institutions.
Our mission is simple: make knowledge accessible to everyone, everywhere, even without reliable internet.

Who We Serve
FRELIP is designed for communities where access to quality educational resources is limited:
- Students at universities and secondary schools in Africa, Asia, and South America
- Educators looking for free teaching materials and professional development
- Librarians building information literacy programs with limited budgets
- Researchers who need access to open-access academic literature
- Community organizations promoting digital literacy and lifelong learning
Why FRELIP Matters
According to UNESCO, over 250 million young people lack basic literacy skills. In many emerging economies, university libraries cannot afford journal subscriptions that cost thousands of dollars per year. Students rely on unreliable internet connections and often cannot access the resources they need to succeed.
FRELIP changes this by providing:
- 100% free access — No subscriptions, no paywalls, no hidden costs
- Offline-first technology — The entire ecosystem can run on a local server without internet
- Curated, quality content — Vetted resources from trusted academic publishers
- Multilingual support — Content in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese
- Community-driven — Built by and for the communities we serve
Our Values
- Open Access — Knowledge should be free and universally available
- Equity — Every learner deserves quality educational tools regardless of geography or economic status
- Community — We build with and for the communities we serve
- Sustainability — Our tools are designed to work with minimal infrastructure
Frequently Asked Questions
Is FRELIP really free?
Yes, FRELIP is completely free for all users. There are no subscription fees, no premium tiers, and no hidden costs. All platforms — the gateway, learning courses, discovery search, and research guides — are available at no charge.
Can I use FRELIP without internet access?
Yes. FRELIP’s offline deployment system allows institutions to install the entire ecosystem on a local server (even a Raspberry Pi). Once installed, all services work without any internet connection. When connectivity is available, the system syncs with our central servers for content updates.
What countries does FRELIP serve?
FRELIP is designed for emerging economies worldwide, with a current focus on sub-Saharan Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa), South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan), Southeast Asia (Philippines, Indonesia), and South America (Brazil, Colombia, Peru). However, our resources are available to anyone, anywhere.
How can I contribute to FRELIP?
We welcome contributions from educators, librarians, developers, and translators. Visit our Get Involved page to learn how you can help expand access to knowledge in emerging economies.
