It is a unique, persistent identifier — free of charge — that connects you, the researcher, to everything you produce: journal articles, book chapters, datasets, grants, peer reviews, patents and theses. Think of it as a permanent digital name tag that no two researchers share and that never changes, even when your name, your institution or your field does. The problem it solves is older than the internet. In Nigerian scholarship especially, names collide constantly — how many A. Okafor, M. Bello or C. Eze entries sit in the world’s databases? At the same time, one person may publish as Chidinma A. Nwosu, then C. A. Nwosu, then Chidinma Adaeze Nwosu-Bello after marriage. Search engines and indexes cannot tell which papers belong to whom. ORCID cuts through this: your iD stays the same through every name change, every move to a new department or university, and every shift in country or discipline. An “Also known as” field even holds your name variants in one place. An ORCID iD looks like a 16-digit number, split into four groups of four and expressed as a web address: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1825-009716 digits · four blocks of four · the last character may be an “X” Those 16 digits are always required in full — you cannot drop the leading zeros. The final character is a checksum computed under the ISO/IEC 7064 (MOD 11-2) standard, which is why it is occasionally a capital X rather than a digit; that is normal, not a typo. Anyone can click your iD and land on your public ORCID record, a single page that shows your verified affiliations, funding and works. ORCID itself is a global not-for-profit organization, sustained by fees from its member institutions — universities, publishers and funders — and governed by a board that represents that membership. Researchers never pay. As of ORCID’s 2025 Annual Report, more than 10.6 million researchers were actively engaged with the registry across 192 countries, with over 20 million iDs issued in total. It has quietly become part of the plumbing of global research — and increasingly, the price of entry. Why it matters now, not “someday” ORCID has moved from “nice to have” to “expected.” More than 3,000 journals — including PLOS, Nature and Elsevier titles — now use ORCID in their submission and peer-review systems, often requiring it for corresponding authors. Major funders such as the US National Institutes of Health, UK Research and Innovation and the Wellcome Trust capture ORCID iDs in grant applications. For a Nigerian researcher aiming at international journals, collaborations or fellowships, not having an iD increasingly means friction at exactly the moment you can least afford it — mid-submission, mid-application. How to register your ORCID iD Registration is genuinely fast — ORCID’s own guidance says it takes less than a minute — and you only need a name, an email address and a password. Here is the whole flow. Step 1 Go to orcid.org/register Open orcid.org/register in any browser. Use an email you will keep long-term — ideally add both your institutional and a personal address later, so you never lose access when you change jobs. Step 2 Enter your name, email and a password First name and email are required; last name is optional but you should add it. Choose a strong password. That is the minimum — no fees, no documents, no institutional approval needed. Step 3 Set your default visibility ORCID asks who can see new information you add — Everyone, Trusted parties, or Only me. Choose Everyone as your default so your record is publicly discoverable (you can still hide individual items later). Step 4 Accept the terms and verify your email Confirm the terms of use and data-processing consent, then click the verification link ORCID emails you. Your record is not fully active until the email is verified. Step 5 Record your iD — and use it everywhere Copy your new 16-digit iD. Add it to your email signature, your CV, your university profile and every manuscript submission from now on. Consistency is what makes the iD work. Before you register: search first You may already have an iD — some publishers or institutions create one on your behalf. Search the ORCID registry for your name, and try registering with an email you have used for journal submissions. Catching this now avoids the single most common ORCID problem: ending up with two records (more on that below). How to add your publications An empty ORCID record does little for you. The value comes from a well-populated record — one that actually lists your works so that reviewers, editors and collaborators see your track record at a glance.
