This changes the assumption that traffic streams are homogeneous and lane-bound, offering a more realistic tool for cities where motorcycles, cars, and trucks share roads without strict lane rules. For African traffic management, it could improve simulation of congestion and safety interventions in rapidly motorising cities.
Unreliable grid and back-feeding reduce the economic viability of rooftop solar with battery storage.
Using Eagle Square in Abuja as a case study, the analysis shows that grid outages and selling excess power back to the grid can undermine the financial returns of a grid-connected solar-plus-battery system. This challenges the assumption that grid connection always improves solar economics, especially where the grid is unreliable. For African policymakers promoting rooftop solar, the finding suggests that battery storage and grid reliability must be co-optimised to make projects bankable.
A Gamma stochastic model predicts railway wheel remaining life from real optical measurements.
Using 80 wheels from ten vehicles monitored with a CALIPRI C42 profilometer, the study shows that a multi-indicator Gamma degradation model can estimate remaining useful life (RUL) by tracking cumulative, random wear. This moves beyond fixed maintenance schedules to condition-based predictions, which can reduce downtime and safety risks. For African rail operators, it offers a data-driven way to plan wheel maintenance where resources are tight.
The UN Cybercrime Convention may not fix the failures of Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties.
The paper argues that MLATs often fail to deliver timely digital evidence or hold cross-border offenders accountable, and the UNCC—adopted in December 2024—is the biggest multilateral response since the Budapest Convention. Metaheuristic-tuned PI controllers improve electric vehicle motor performance using a multi-error objective.
The paper tunes proportional–integral (PI) controllers for field-oriented control (FOC) of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) in EVs using a multi-error ITAE (integral of time-weighted absolute error) objective. This approach optimises speed and current loops simultaneously, overcoming the limitations of single-performance tuning. The network replaces element-wise addition or concatenation in U-shaped decoders with a multi-scale subtraction operation, which preserves complementary features and sharpens localisation. This could lead to more accurate early diagnosis from medical images. For African healthcare, where radiologist shortages are common, such automated tools could support screening if validated locally.
igraph 1.0 released, enabling fast network analysis across Python, R, and Mathematica.
The igraph library combines a fast C core with beginner-friendly interfaces, and version 1.0 marks twenty years of development. This lowers the barrier for researchers to analyse graphs in their preferred language. For African data scientists, it provides a free, robust tool for network studies in epidemiology, social science, and infrastructure.
Large language model-based agents are defined and classified in a new review.
