A new traffic-flow model captures how different vehicle classes drag on each other when lane discipline breaks down.

Gidey et al. extend second-order multi-class traffic models — equations that treat each vehicle type as a separate fluid — by adding a relative drag function that accounts for heterogeneous speeds and lane-discipline violations common in mixed traffic. This changes the assumption that vehicles of different classes interact only through shared road space; the drag term makes the interaction explicit. The implication is more realistic prediction of congestion and flow stability in African cities where motorcycles, cars, and trucks share lanes. An unreliable grid and rules against back-feeding can make rooftop solar with batteries less economically viable, even in sunny Nigeria.

Sanda et al. modelled a grid-connected rooftop solar-plus-battery system at Eagle Square, Abuja, and found that grid unavailability and restrictions on exporting excess power to the grid reduce the system’s economic return. This challenges the assumption that adding storage always improves viability; the value depends heavily on how often the grid fails and whether back-feeding is allowed. For African policymakers, the finding suggests that interconnection rules and grid reliability are as important as solar irradiance in determining whether rooftop PV pays off. The new UN Cybercrime Convention may not fix the slow cross-border evidence sharing that Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties routinely fail to deliver.

Sarkar, Lazarus, and Shukla assess the UN Convention against Cybercrime (UNCC), adopted December 2024, and argue that without stronger implementation mechanisms it may repeat the delays of existing Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs) — formal agreements for one country to help another gather evidence. The paper’s focus on India and beyond highlights that African states, which often rely on MLATs for digital evidence, could see limited improvement unless the convention includes practical enforcement tools. A Gamma stochastic model can estimate railway wheel remaining life from real optical measurements, but the study is based on only 80 wheels.

Louragli et al. used a Gamma stochastic degradation model — a statistical approach for cumulative wear — on 80 wheels from ten vehicles, measured with a CALIPRI C42 optical profilometer. This moves beyond single-indicator wear checks by combining multiple measurements to predict remaining useful life (RUL). The practical implication is better-timed wheel maintenance, which matters for African rail operators seeking to reduce downtime and cost. Published in Applied Sciences (2025).

A modified search algorithm improves secrecy and energy harvesting in STAR-RIS-assisted wireless networks.

Gafar et al. propose a Modified Differentiated Creative Search (MDCS) algorithm to jointly optimise transmit beamforming, artificial noise, and the transmission/reflection coefficients of a simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) — a surface that can both reflect and transmit signals to extend coverage. The approach aims to enhance physical-layer security while also harvesting energy in simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems. For African networks with limited infrastructure, such techniques could support more secure and energy-efficient connectivity. Published in Information (2025).

A comprehensive review maps how synthesis and structure control the electrochemical performance of LiFePO4 cathodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Yin et al. review recent advances in olivine-structured lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, LFP) cathodes using a unified crystal structure–synthesis–performance–manufacturing framework. This consolidates scattered findings on how precursor chemistry and synthesis routes affect battery performance, which matters for scaling LFP production. For African researchers and manufacturers, the review provides a structured reference for developing cheaper, safer batteries for electric vehicles and grid storage. 🔬 Global breakthroughs

A multi-scale subtraction network reduces redundant information in medical image segmentation, improving boundary accuracy.

Zhao et al. introduce M2SNet, which replaces the common addition or concatenation operations in U-shaped segmentation networks with multi-scale subtraction to better preserve complementary features between levels. This changes the assumption that simple feature fusion is sufficient; subtraction reduces redundancy that blurs edges. The implication is more accurate medical image segmentation for early diagnosis, though the study is a methods paper and clinical validation is not reported here. igraph 1.0, a network analysis library used across sciences, now offers fast performance with beginner-friendly interfaces in Python, R, and Mathematica.

Antonov et al. announce the release of igraph 1.0 after twenty years of development, pairing a fast C core with accessible interfaces. This lowers the entry barrier for network analysis, which is widely used in epidemiology, social science, and biology. For African researchers with limited computational resources, the combination of speed and ease of use could enable more reproducible network studies. Published in PLoS ONE (2025).

A review defines and categorises large language model-based intelligent agents, which use natural language to reason, plan, and use tools.

Cheng et al. survey the emerging field of LLM-based agents, which leverage large language models as a universal interface for cognition and interaction. This provides a taxonomy and methods overview at a time when the concept of intelligent agents is rapidly evolving. For African researchers and developers, the review offers a structured entry point to building and evaluating such agents locally. A coupled thermo-hydraulic-mechanical model shows that cold fluid injection deforms fractures and affects geothermal heat extraction.

Li et al. develop a thermo-hydraulic–mechanical (THM) coupled single-fracture model for enhanced geothermal reservoirs, addressing the limitation of single-parameter assessments. The model shows that mechanical deformation from cold injection changes fluid flow and heat recovery, which matters for designing sustainable geothermal systems. For African countries with geothermal potential, such as Kenya and Ethiopia, this supports more accurate resource evaluation. Published in Energies (2025).
