🌍 African-led research

Brazil’s rabies surveillance system can be repurposed to detect other bat-borne viruses, including potentially zoonotic ones.

Researchers screened 150 bats from São Paulo state, selected from 2,422 specimens, using viral metagenomics (sequencing all viral genetic material in a sample) to identify viruses beyond rabies. This shows that existing passive surveillance infrastructure—built for one disease—can be adapted for broader pandemic preparedness. For African countries with similar rabies monitoring networks, this offers a low-cost way to expand zoonotic virus surveillance without building new systems from scratch.

Ebola survivors and affected families in Bundibugyo, Uganda, face lasting fear, stigma, and uncertainty years after the 2007 outbreak.

Interviews with survivors, families, and community members reveal that the psychosocial and social effects of Ebola persist long after physical recovery. This challenges the assumption that outbreak response ends when transmission stops. For African health systems, it means Ebola preparedness must include long-term mental health and community reintegration support, not just acute care.

The rVSV-ZEBOV Ebola vaccine produces cross-reactive antibodies against Bundibugyo virus that can last for years in outbreak-affected populations in the DRC.

This longitudinal cohort study tracked antibody responses in people vaccinated during Ebola outbreaks and found that the Zaire Ebola vaccine also triggers immune responses against Bundibugyo virus, a different Ebola species with no licensed vaccine. The durability of these cross-reactive antibodies suggests the existing vaccine could offer some protection against Bundibugyo outbreaks. For African countries facing multiple Ebola species, this could inform rapid response strategies while Bundibugyo-specific vaccines are developed.

In heart failure patients, the left atrium can remain dysfunctional even when the left ventricle recovers, and this mismatch predicts worse outcomes.

Among 1,182 patients on ARNI therapy (a drug combination that improves heart function), those whose left ventricular strain improved but left atrial strain did not had poorer prognoses. This shifts focus from a ventricle-only view of recovery to include the atrium, which reflects cumulative pressure overload. For African cardiologists managing heart failure with limited resources, adding left atrial strain to routine echocardiography could improve risk stratification.

An interactional analysis of two neural machine translation tools in healthcare encounters shows they often mistranslate, omit, or alter meaning, leading to misunderstandings. This challenges the assumption that such tools are a quick fix for interpreter shortages. For multilingual African health systems, it means deploying these tools without professional oversight may worsen care for patients with limited English or dominant-language proficiency.

Healthcare providers in Uganda’s Masaka region delay disclosing HIV status to children on ART, despite WHO guidance to disclose by age 12.

Interviews with providers reveal they struggle with when and how to tell children their HIV status, often deferring to caregivers or waiting until adolescence. This gap between policy and practice means many children remain unaware of their status, potentially affecting treatment adherence. Machine-learning and biophysical models can predict the specificity of T-cell receptor–peptide-MHC interactions, a key step for immunotherapy design.
