🌍 African-led research

Bat rabies surveillance networks can be repurposed to detect other zoonotic viruses, a Brazilian framework shows.

Researchers used an algorithm to select 150 representative bats from 2,422 collected across São Paulo state and applied viral metagenomics (sequencing all viral genetic material in a sample) to find potentially zoonotic viruses. This changes the view that rabies surveillance is single-purpose, showing it can double as an early-warning system for coronaviruses, filoviruses, and paramyxoviruses. For African health systems with existing rabies monitoring, this offers a low-cost way to expand zoonotic virus detection without building new infrastructure. Published in One Health (2025).

Ebola survivors and affected families in Bundibugyo, Uganda, face lasting fear and stigma years after the 2007 outbreak.

Interviews with survivors, families, and community members reveal that short- and long-term effects include persistent social exclusion and uncertainty, even after recovery. This shifts the focus from acute medical care to the chronic psychosocial burden that outbreak responses often overlook. The rVSV-ZEBOV Ebola vaccine produces cross-reactive antibodies against Bundibugyo virus that can last for years.

A longitudinal cohort study in the Democratic Republic of the Congo found that people vaccinated with the Zaire Ebola vaccine developed antibodies that also recognise Bundibugyo virus, and these responses were durable. This changes the assumption that vaccines are strictly strain-specific and suggests the existing vaccine stockpile could offer some protection during Bundibugyo outbreaks, which currently have no licensed vaccine. For African outbreak preparedness, it supports using rVSV-ZEBOV as a stopgap while Bundibugyo-specific vaccines are developed. Published in The Lancet (2025).

In heart failure patients, the left atrium can remain diseased even when the left ventricle recovers, signalling worse outcomes.

Among 1,182 patients on ARNI therapy, those with discordant recovery—improved left ventricular strain but persistent left atrial myopathy—had a distinct and poorer prognosis. This challenges the standard practice of judging treatment success by left ventricular function alone. For African cardiologists managing heart failure with limited resources, adding left atrial strain assessment could refine risk stratification and guide follow-up intensity. Machine translation tools in clinical consultations can reproduce inequity rather than bridge language barriers.

Healthcare providers in Masaka, Uganda, cite fear of caregiver reactions and lack of training as barriers to disclosing HIV status to children.

Machine-learning models combined with biophysical data can predict whether T-cell receptors will bind specific targets.
