Engineered alpha-1-antitrypsin matches natural protein’s activity in lab and animal tests.

Recombinant A1AT, a therapeutic glycoprotein, showed comparable in vitro and in vivo activity to plasma-derived A1AT, potentially offering a safer, scalable alternative. This could reduce dependence on human plasma for treating A1AT deficiency and other diseases. For African researchers, it opens avenues for local production of biologics.
